Heterogeneous Tool Landscape

Many companies have different tools in use for process management. Modelling, analysis, publishing of processes and system architectures, as well as the implementation of business processes, require the application of different tools. These tools are more or less integrated.

Some attempts at standardization, such as BPEL and BPMN, have created the first common standards. Many tools still interpret the standards very differently.

Even in the companies which have committed themselves to a tool that captures models, processes and systems are often also captured in Microsoft Office products like Visio. Add to this the increase in company mergers which force the standardization to one single tool. The application of several tools is not only a necessary reality, but also offers possibilities. The "Best of Breed" approach, i.e., the concentration on the best and market-leading tools, allows users to employ those tools which they can best support. Process management can thereby find a broader use. The problem of topical, outdated process documentation cannot be removed only by the fact that the people with the corporate knowledge maintain their knowledge about systems and business processes themselves. This is practical only with simple and cost-efficient tools, based on Microsoft Office.
